“HIP-HOP APPRECIATION 101″ is a concept project, meant to spotlight a number of topics inside the music and in society itself.
Set in a scholastic atmosphere, The project presents HIP-HOP as an art form and touches on subjects such as…artistic knowledge and responsibility, materialism and misogyny within the music and a host of other subjects that has contributed to the perceived decline of a still vibrant genre.

All of this is done in a light-hearted, entertaining manner that is done not to indict, but to create a platform for discussion.

Nite People shared the stage in Boston with the legendary Definitive Jux founder El-P.  The night was filled with good music, good drinks, and good people.  In the words of Borat it was a “Great Success!!”  The evening featured amazing performances from Sage Francis & B Dolan, Yak Ballz & Chauncey, and of course El-P.  Nite People set it off and had the crowd amped for El and his people.  Yohon DI busted out the infamous “GOLD PEICES” on stage which ultimately lead to some classic photos with the gang.  Big shout out to El, Sage, Yak, Chauncey, Kusto, Pablo, Timmy Wiggins, Paul Mighty, and Steadfast.  Special thanks to everyone who came out and showed support.  See you next time!

SLS affiliates Spit Supreme & Paul Mighty have been making some serious noise lately!  Brooklyn Emcee Sav Killz just leaked the first song from his new album called “Hoodlums & Crooks”.  The song features a guest appearance from Spit Supreme on the mic while Paul Mighty laces a ridiculous beat!  The song even gained attention from the one and only DJ Premier, who recently played it on his “Live From Headcourterz” radio show.

For those that don’t know, Forth Star (repping our NYC division of SLS) not only makes crazy beats & rhymes but he’s the drummer for the Brooklyn based group Benicio and the Del Toros.  They are an eclectic band with a unique concept and sound derived from elements of flamenco, funk, reggae, blues,  and jazz.

The year was 2000.  A new decade was on the rise and new experiences were ahead of me.  I just graduated high school and I was off to the hub of the universe.  New York City.  Right before I moved I had recorded a bunch of songs with Forth Star at “The Fort”.  I had them all on a cassette tape and I remember feeling very proud when I meet other Hip Hop heads.  In NYC, there’s MILLIONS of emcees, but at the time, not every emcee necessarily had product.  Home studios were just starting to bubble and burning your music to a CD was still new for alot of people myself included.  Napster was at it’s peak at this time and I went nuts with the downloads!  I discovered alot of great music through Napster that I had never heard before, all which motivated me to get in the lab.  

Two heads that I really connected with in NYC was Mandean & Crillz McP.  We were all young and still learning our crafts.  Both were emcees and producers but overtime Mandean focused on the rhyme and Crillz focused on the beat.  Mandean started a crew called “Small Empire” consisting of many of his boys from all over the country.  Here’s a little history into some of my “Small Empire” sessions!

Crillz was going heavy with the MPC at this time.  This was the first E The Real, Mandean, Crillz collabo.  Dean was living above this pizza shop in the Bronx called “Goodfellas” and he set up a little recording spot in his bedroom.  Shit was tight (literally) but we made it work.  We spent many late nights smoking on the finest, pounding slices, and creating timeless music.  Still to this day I don’t think I have anything that sounds like this song.  Real bugged out, abstract, savage shit!  This song was on Mandean’s second album “MindGlueEffects”.  Check it out!

It’s the Mind 2003 produced by Crillz McP.

Ironically it wasn’t until I moved back to Mass when Dean, Crillz, & myself really started to make some crazy music.  I was down in the Bronx once a month or so and we all loved making tracks! Looking back, these were vital years for my growth as an artist.  I was learning a lot about my style and the technical aspects of recording.  Plus these cats were the first people I started recording with outside of “The Fort”.  I always found it valuable to record with different people because it helps you learn and develop.  It was cool too because I wasn’t hesitant to be experimental with these cats and they were open to it.  Lyrically I started to get real “weird” with my subject matter but it sounded fly!  If it wasn’t for these experimental times I wouldn’t be where I am today.
